I really have a hard time beliving he told her about the Europe trip. To me it looks like he phoned her up the night before and said, "Hey babe off to Europe for a couple weeks see you I get back kthx bye." Of course maybe I'm just searching for a rational explination when there is none. Raging drunken vengence sex on the 5th day is pretty strange.

Say it was your father on his death bed. You may be able to get in a few words that otherwise you would not get. I guess I value this enough to spare less then 10 minutes of my vacation. Then again I am at a point in my life where things like this are more likely to happen so I try to avoid the worst case scenario.

If you need those few moments before your father dies, then you have family issues that should be sorted out. There should be nothing you have to say to a loved one before they die, that you haven't already told them, or they don't already know.
